HKU’s Lab of GIS Named in Honor of
GIS Pioneer Professor Chor-Pang Lo
To honour the immense contributions of Professor Chor-Pang Lo, a pioneer in GIS and remote sensing, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) held a naming ceremony on October 7, 2024 for the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory in the Department of Geography, officially designating it as the "C.P. Lo Lab of GIS".
Professor Chor-Pang Lo, a former Reader in the Department of Geography at HKU, played a vital role in introducing GIS technology to Hong Kong. His pioneering work established the groundwork for GIS applications in urban planning, environmental management, and spatial analysis, substantially influencing both local and international landscapes. By naming the GIS laboratory after Professor Lo, HKU aims to commemorate his legacy and inspire future generations.
The naming ceremony was attended by distinguished guests, faculty members, students, and alumni. Professor Peng Gong, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development) of HKU, Dr. Winnie Tang, Founder and Chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong), Professor Anthony Yeh, Acting Dean and Chair Professor of Urban Planning and GIS at HKU, and Professor Shunlin Liang, Head and Chair Professor of the Department of Geography, officiated the ceremony.

In her remarks, Dr. Tang highlighted Professor Lo's role in paving the way for advancements in smart city initiatives and geospatial data applications. “His relentless pursuit of innovation continues to drive progress in geospatial technologies.” Dr. Tang said.
