Dr. Winnie Tang, Chairman of Esri China (HK), was invited by Towngas Engineering Academy to give a CPD Talk on the topic, “Building Smart City with Smart Gas Utility Powered by GIS”, on 13 June 2018. About 100 technical staff, engineers and to-be-engineers were attracted to the talk for an update on how GIS technology can be applied in building a smart city with the gas utility industry.

As the world is facing more challenges from an aging population with more people moving into the city area, it is of utmost importance for us to take new approaches to improve the efficiency and resilience of the community since our natural resources, including energy resources are limited.

A few practical examples were quoted in Dr. Tang’s presentation to showcase how GIS was applied in the gas industry with an aim to develop a greener, more sustainable and smarter city. Among the six core components (Smart Economy, Smart Mobility, Smart Environment, Smart Living, Smart Government, Smart People) in a smart city, Dr. Tang stated that she weighed Smart People heavily on her heart as a smart city should be people-centric and be built upon the needs of the people; therefore, she encouraged the youth audience in the talk to treasure learning opportunities and make Hong Kong smarter together.
