Smart City Talk for Hong Kong Institute of Planner

How to optimize the development of a smart city by applying geographic information system (GIS)? Any best practice around the world that we can learn from? What previously unimaginable insight can be gained through a combination of Internet of things (IoT) devices, big data, inclusive apps, and community engagement?

Dr. Winnie Tang, Chairman of Esri China (HK) was invited by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) to share her knowledge and insight on these exciting aspects of smart city development on 14 September 2017. Established in 1970s, the HKIP is a professional planning institute representing the planning profession in Hong Kong.

The 90-minute seminar was well received with fruitful discussion with all the HKIP members and guests.

Titled “Building a Smart City with The Science of Where”, Dr. Tang differentiated a smart city and our society today from six aspects. They are: smart people, smart economy, smart environment, smart government, smart living and smart mobility.

One of the important tools for smart planning introduced at the seminar was 3D GIS. Building upon the existing data and infrastructure, 3D GIS can provide a basis for comparing alternative design for the future through visualizing 3D models of a city environment tailored for different types of users. Boston of the U.S., for instance, was able to balance the needs of development and preservation of history through this tool to better determine the impacts of development, while Miami-Dade County also in the U.S. uses the tool to reserve spaces for future development.

To conclude, by applying The Science of Where, we can co-create our smart city together.
