GIS Academy Boosts Talents Pool for HK

 

The GIS Academy, a non-profit organization launched in April 2023, is making remarkable progress in nurturing the talent pool for geospatial technology in Hong Kong. Through a series of impactful events and initiatives, such as the Esri China (HK) 25th Anniversary STEAM Cup Multi-Subjects ArcGIS StoryMaps Application Competition and the Esri Young Scholars Award, the Academy is actively fostering GIS expertise to drive smart city development in our city.

 

Mr. Peter Yan King-shun, JP, CEO of Cyberport, advises students to embrace GIS technology for a future-ready mindset.

 

The award presentation ceremony for the Esri China (HK) 25th Anniversary STEAM Cup - Multi-Subjects ArcGIS StoryMaps Application Competition was successfully held in July. We were privileged to have Mr. Peter Yan King-shun, JP, CEO of Cyberport, as our esteemed Guest of Honor. The winning teams from primary and secondary schools presented their innovative geospatial projects through ArcGIS StoryMaps. The students were allowed to choose subjects based on their own interest, such as English, History, and even Ethics & Religious Studies, highlighting the versatility of GIS beyond geography.

Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School scored the “Most-liked Award” of the Esri China (HK) 25th Anniversary STEAM Cup - Multi-Subjects ArcGIS StoryMaps Application Competition.

 

In June, the Esri Young Scholars Award Presentation Ceremony also achieved great success. We were delighted to have Mr. Clarence Leung Wang-ching, BBS, JP, as our Guest of Honor. The winner from the individual category, Mr. Cheung Chi Cho, Evan, shared his exemplary project titled "A Walk to Remember - Measuring Objective Walkability with Environmental Considerations in Hong Kong". Mr. Cheung, a student of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong, received a travel grant to attend the Esri User Conference in San Diego, where he presented his project to GIS professionals from around the world.

Mr. Lam Yik and Mr. Yu Kai Him Otto, representing the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics at the Faculty of Construction and Environment, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, emerged as the champion team. They were honored for their outstanding project titled "The Hiking Sustainability - Discussing the Impacts of Active Hiking on Suburban Terrain".
