Inter-School Model United Nations 2022
Kick-off with GIS
The Inter-School Model United Nations 2022 (ISMUNHK 2022) was successfully held in early August, with 250 students from different secondary schools taking part in a two-day mock conference. Organized by the Inter-school Model United Nations and supported by the Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) and the UNESCO Glocal Peace Center, ISMUNHK aims to facilitate discussions mimicking those seen in actual United Nations conferences, giving participants an opportunity to take part in global discussions. Dr. Winnie Tang, founder & chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong), and founder & honorary president of the Smart City Consortium (SCC), was invited to the opening ceremony to share her insight on the topic of “Smart Technology Driving a Sustainable Future”.
Sustainability has become increasingly important at all levels – global, national, organizational, and personal. How can society keep developing while also preserving its environment? Hence, sustainable development is the key challenge for everyone. Meanwhile, GIS plays a fundamental role in creating and sharing United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) data and informing policy formulation and decision-making around sustainable development programs. Also, GIS and geospatial data are indispensable to governments when monitoring and evaluating the progress of achieving UNSDGs.
In addition, Dr. Tang also cares about the challenges in youth development. As President Xi Jinping stressed that “Hong Kong will prosper only when its young people thrive”, Dr. Tang hopes that young people could achieve all-around development by acquiring geospatial thinking abilities, and together build a better Hong Kong.
Dr. Winnie Tang, founder and chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong) shared her views on how GIS can help countries to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
