GeoLab Opens a Gateway for
Public to Learn GIS
The Geospatial Lab (GeoLab) officially was opened. The opening ceremony was officiated by the Secretary for Development, Mr Michael Wong Wai-lun. Established by the Development Bureau of the Hong Kong Government, Geospatial Lab operated by Tung Wah Group of Hospitals with supports from Smart City Consortium (SCC). It fosters the public to make use of spatial data in developing smart applications and dovetailing the Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) initiative.
Geospatial Lab is located in Kwun Tong and provides fitted-out working space and coaching services to support experimental projects using spatial data and conduct activities such as competitions, workshops and talks. Citizens are welcome to join membership to enjoy the facilities and tutorials. Consultation services are available for startups who has formulated concrete geospatial-related business plan. Geospatial Lab received wide range of attentions from government and statutory bodies. The chairperson of Construction Industry Council (CIC) Ar Ada Fung visited Geospatial Lab on 8 September 2021. Dr Ann Mak, manager of Geospatial Lab introduced the GIS capabilities on construction industry to the members of CIC.
SCC is actively engaging the public not only supporting the setup of Geospatial Lab, but also showcasing the innovative GIS technologies at InnoCarnival 2021. The exhibition, organised by the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC), was held in October in Hong Kong Science Park under the theme "Innovate for a Bright Future”. SCC showcased Map in Learning Program for STEAM education in Hong Kong, drew the attention from the students at the venue.
