Esri China (HK) supported the Smart City Project Programme organized by the Education Bureau, as it aims to further primary and secondary students’ knowledge acquired from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. Dr. Winnie Tang, Chairman of Esri China (HK), acted as a judge for the senior secondary group in the Programme. As one of the supporting organizations, Esri China (HK) has also spent tremendous effort in promoting STEM education through our Map in Learning Program, in which gives local schools free access to ArcGIS Online, a professional cloud-based geo-information analysis platform.

At the award presentation ceremony and exhibition held on 28 June 2019, students have showcased some innovative ways to realize the ideas of smart city in their home, school, community and city environment. One example is the winning project done by students from St. Paul’s Secondary School in their project titled “Tree Regulation Eco-friendly Environmental System (TREES)”. With multiple sensors, the system can measure tree tilt angle, metabolic rate and the hydrostatic pressure to detect problematic trees in early stages, so that remedial actions can be taken to prevent the trees from falling.

STEM Plus, a local education platform, organized the other event called STEM World to provide a stage for students to display their STEM projects at the Hong Kong Book Fair from 17-23 July 2019. In the event, Ms. Hung Yuen Ling from HKEdCity made a presentation to explain how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) could facilitate STEM education and enhance the problem-solving skills of students.
