The Esri Young Scholars Award program has been globally launched in 2012 to encourage university students to solve problems through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, and winners are honored each year at the Esri User Conference. Esri China (HK) has been sending student projects from Hong Kong to participate in the award program since 2017.

Champion of the program from Hong Kong this year is Choy Tsz Hin, Frankie, who graduated from the University of Hong Kong. His winning project title is “A Glimpse of Bus Services in Hong Kong: The Territorial Bus Service Study – Finding Where the Problems are”. A Story Map presentation of his project is available here, and other 2018 Esri Young Scholars Award (Hong Kong) winning projects can be found here.

Frankie attended the User Conference at San Diego to present his work and join more than 18,000 GIS professionals in a week-long program of presentations, workshops, and social events. To Frankie, the User Conference was full of knowledge, skills and intelligence as expected. The presentations of different software, technologies, techniques and applications fascinated him that the use of GIS could be such diverse and professional to discover, analyze and solve different problems. He would even hope for a longer conference which he could be engaged in more workshops and presentations.

Frankie has also participated in the Education Summit in the first half of the conference, which was specially designed for teachers and students with workshops illustrating how we could incorporate various software and techniques of GIS into academic research, teaching and projects. The Education Summit would be a fabulous chance to understand how to appropriately and professionally utilize GIS in academia.

Apart from the Education Summit, Frankie showcased his winning project in the Map Gallery, which was a precious platform for him to understand how people from different nations, cultures, ages, occupations and interests to use GIS for their study, research and objectives. Frankie was amazed by a Georgian county government which utilized GIS to manage the huge pedestrian flow after baseball match that it was a simple but important example for cities around the world to develop smart cities.
