Sr. Paul Tsui, Managing Director of Esri China (HK), on the other hand, discussed the application of GIS in FinTech in conjunction with entrepreneurs of “DBS Accelerator”. Banks, such as JP Morgan Chase and Bank of America, have been using GIS to assist in site selection of their branches and ATM by analysing where their customers live and shop. Insurance companies also rely on GIS to help minimize the loss in claims from property insurance due to extreme weather caused by climate change.  Furthermore, GIS has been increasingly used in the banking industry to detect and discover fraud and suspected money laundering activities from billion numbers of transaction records daily by and tracking and analyzing the flow of money from different locations at different periods of time using Geoanalytics.

The sponsorship of the two accelerator programs is part of the Esri Startup Program for entrepreneurs who are building apps or services that are location related. The program gives qualifying startups three years free use of the ArcGIS mapping platform and support service, together with marketing opportunities at Esri’s biggest events.

As Esri President once said, “Application of GIS is only limited by the imagination of users”. The Esri Startup Program is to help young companies innovate using the full set of advanced mapping tools provided by Esri.

So far, more than 300 startups have participated in the Esri Startup Program, and the number is still growing.
