300 School Students Gather at PolyU
for Large-Scale GIS Workshop
Around 300 secondary school students gathered at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) for one of the largest GIS workshops supported by Esri China (Hong Kong) in recent years, exploring how ArcGIS can support urban renewal, social innovation, and sustainable community development.
Esri China (Hong Kong) supported the URA x PolyU Igniting Social Innovation Competition 2026 by delivering GIS hands-on training sessions on April 25, 2026, at PolyU. Co-organized by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and the Department of Applied Social Sciences of PolyU, the competition invites senior secondary school students to explore the stories and challenges of Hong Kong’s old districts and propose innovative ideas to help revitalize local communities while preserving their unique character.
To further encourage GIS learning among young people, schools and NGOs serving youth in Hong Kong are welcome to join the Map in Learning (MiL) Program. Launched in 2015 by Esri China (Hong Kong), with support from the Education Bureau (EDB) of the HKSAR Government and Hong Kong Education City (HKEdCity), the MiL Program provides school-based ArcGIS Online licenses and supports the development of spatial thinking, STEAM learning, and innovative problem-solving skills among students.
During the workshop, students learned how ArcGIS Online can be used to visualize geospatial data, understand community issues, and support more informed decision-making.
