Dr. Winnie Tang Gives Talks
at the University of Cambridge
On June 23, 2025, Dr. Winnie Tang, MH, JP, founder and chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong), delivered two insightful presentations at the University of Cambridge, highlighting the transformative role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the low-altitude economy (LAE) in fostering sustainable urban development in Hong Kong and beyond.
In a special edition of the Digital Road Future (DRF) Lunchtime Clinic at the Civil Engineering Department, the University of Cambridge, Dr. Tang showcased how integrating GIS with drone technology is revolutionizing the construction industry in Hong Kong and worldwide. Attended by researchers ranging from PhD students to senior fellows, Dr. Tang emphasized the use of drones for efficient construction management, demonstrating how ArcGIS technology such as Site Scan for ArcGIS enables 3D data collection, visualization, and analysis to foster sustainable urban development, and offering valuable insights for contemporary civil engineering challenges.
Later that day, Dr. Tang delivered her Keynote Speech about “GIS and LAE for the Development and Sustainability of Hong Kong” at King's College, Cambridge with King's Politics, reiterating the significance of GIS and LAE for sustainable development. She elaborated on how the low-altitude economy can create innovative growth opportunities. Dr. Tang highlighted the importance of GIS in integrating complex data such as topography, meteorological conditions, and land use to plan low-altitude airspace routes effectively, by sharing real-world applications.
Dr. Tang’s presentation underscored the importance of the integration of GIS and drone technologies, illustrating their potential to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in construction projects. These presentations also demonstrated the growing global importance of the low-altitude economy as a driver of sustainable urban innovation and economic development.
Additionally, Dr. Winnie Tang, Chief Convenor of the HKU Super Angel Network (HKU SAN), has engaged in a productive discussion with Amy Weatherup, Director of i-Teams at the University of Cambridge. During their meeting, Dr. Tang shared valuable insights on entrepreneurial support for the alumni of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). Amy Weatherup, who specializes in commercializing university innovations, exchanged ideas with Dr. Tang, highlighting the importance of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship within academic communities.
