Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School
- Role Model of GIS Education
STEAM education encompasses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, forming a comprehensive approach to academic disciplines. To equip the next generation with 21st-century skills, Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School has strengthened its STEAM education by integrating GIS into its curriculum. The school was highlighted by Ming Pao as a successful case of expanding students’ horizons by embracing the smart city initiative to nurture smart people for our city.
By promoting STEAM education, schools in Hong Kong are aligning with the global educational trend of preparing students to thrive amidst rapid economic, scientific, and technological advancements. In line with the adoption of STEAM education, Hong Kong Education City (HKEdCity) and Esri China (Hong Kong) launched the Map in Learning (MiL) Program in 2015, with support from the Education Bureau (EDB) of the HKSAR Government. The program aims to promote and sustain an excellent GIS eLearning environment for the next generation. Schools and non-profit organizations in Hong Kong are welcome to participate in the MiL Program. Members of the MiL Program are eligible to join the GIS Academy, a one-stop platform to learn and be inspired by GIS professionals with knowledge of GIS and location intelligence.
As a participant of the Map in Learning (MiL) Program, Kowloon Sam Yuk Secondary School has swiftly reformed its curriculum, striving to incorporate geospatial technology into interdisciplinary learning. GIS, open data, and other related technologies have gradually been introduced into classrooms, facilitated by the School's free subscription to an ArcGIS Online school account via the MiL Program. Students from Sam Yuk garnered awards in various GIS competitions, including the Open GIS Competition 2022 by Geospatial Lab, the Esri China (HK) 25th Anniversary STEAM Cup - Multi-Subjects ArcGIS StoryMaps Application Competition, and the Open Data Hackathon 2023.
