Dr Tang Supports

PolyU Student Entrepreneurship Scheme

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has long been supporting young students in pursuing entrepreneurship. Supported by the ‘Dr Winnie S M Tang-PolyU Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Scholarship’, the PolyU Student Entrepreneurial Proof-of-Concept (POC) Funding Scheme aims to instill a problem-driven innovation mindset and geographical thinking into young talents. This is achieved through experiential learning and student-initiated research and development. Please visit https://youtu.be/oRvQVGjvzRw for Dr Winnie Tang, founder and chairman of Esri China (Hong Kong) ’s message to the students.

This year, the scheme attracted eight teams of students to adopt GIS in their geospatial entrepreneurial proposal. Our company has offered introductory training on the topic of “Location and Geospatial Intelligence” to the teams using GIS. After the final pitch in mid-April, the top three teams were shortlisted for the POC Bootcamp. One of the shortlisted teams, formed by the students of the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering and Electrical Engineering, adopted GIS to develop an advanced automated and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for the search and rescue of missing hikers.

The top three teams were awarded a $10,000 cash prize, a fast-track to the semi-final presentation of the PolyU Micro Fund Scheme for a maximum of $120,000 funding, further incubation support up to $1.29 million, as well as nominations to innovation and entrepreneurship competitions, and the pre-incubation/ incubation programs on top of the POC Fund.
