Esri China (HK) has been a dedicated technology partner with the Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation in the development of the Hong Kong Access Guide since 2012. Recently, there has been a revamp for the Access Guide and a launching ceremony was held on 21 May 2019 to announce the major updates on the Access Guide with the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology. The latest map version of the Access Guide newly added 15 “green travel spots” and updated information about 200 barrier-free access facilities in Hong Kong, including toilets for the disabled, entrances/exits/accesses allowing the passage of wheelchairs and ramps.

Barrier-free access facilities information was collected by a team of volunteers who sat on wheelchair to experience and measure the facilities from the user’s point of view. In the latest updates, more information about accessibility of beautiful natural areas in Hong Kong, such as Tai O, Tai Tam Reservoirs and Lugard Road is made available. Users may also draw a circle on the map to find out barrier-free access facilities within a 5km radius.

The volunteering team also took 360° photos and 360° video for easy understanding of the real situation of the barrier-free access facilities. In the launching ceremony, a wheelchair user claimed the photos and videos helped increase his confidence on accessing the travel spots since he could see how the facilities look like beforehand.
