CIC Master Class – 3D Geospatial Data for

the Construction Industry

Nowadays, the construction industry faces digital transformation, health and safety, carbon neutrality, and other sustainability issues. To tackle these issues, an integrated Common Data Environment (CDE) provides a reliable foundation for smart construction. The Construction Industry Council (CIC) launched the “CIC Master Class on Common Data Environment (Project Managers)” for the management level executive who wishes to generate value from project data and leverage digitization to improve business processes through the use of an integrated common data environment (CDE).

Sr Paul Tsui, CEO of Esri China (Hong Kong), has been invited by the CIC as the guest lecturer on February 3, 2023, to share his insight on the topic of 3D Spatial Data for the Construction Industry. The Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) Portal has been launched by the government in December 2022; over 500 spatial datasets from various government departments are made available through the portal, covering planning, land, building, road networks, transportation, and more.

Sr Tsui has showcased the possible applications of open spatial 3D data, such as the digital terrain model (DTM), 3D Building Footprint, 3D Pedestrian Network and the integration of BIM data to form digital twin for a construction project. With the help of Site Scan for ArcGIS, users can monitor and manage the construction progress, by overlaying drone data on the map with other spatial data in 3D.  Hands-on exercises which showed how to use ArcGIS Survey 123 for tree management have been provided to learners.

This is the second time the CIC has launched the Master Class on CDE. To encourage the construction industry’s capacity to adopt and implement CDE and open geospatial data for construction projects in Hong Kong, the CIC launched the first signature course on CDE last September and achieved great success. Dr. Winnie Tang, founder and chairman of Esri China Hong Kong, and Sr Paul Tsui were the guest lecturers to deliver lessons on the topic of “Integrated CDE for Digital Planning, Sustainability & Design Implementation” and “GIS for Integrated CDE Operation & Maintenance” respectively.
