GIS Workshop Promotes STEAM Education
for Hong Kong Girl Guides
The use of ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS StoryMaps for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education was introduced to 20 Girl Guide leaders in a workshop at the headquarters of Hong Kong Girl Guides Association (HKGGA) on 12 January 2020.
HKGGA works with us on STEAM education via the Map in Learning (MiL) Program, in which Esri China (HK) offers free ArcGIS Online accounts to the youth in Hong Kong. Girl Guide leaders were assigned into different groups to work on a project title of their own choice, create a survey form with Survey123 for ArcGIS, collect data outdoor and finally give their presentation using ArcGIS StoryMaps.
The Hong Kong Girl Guide leaders were pleased to attend the GIS workshop.
Their projects and presentation topics have been creative. One of the groups compared the facilities and add-on services in different convenience stores around Jordan. The other group investigated the accessibility of two routes, the first starting from Hung Hom and the second starting from Yau Tsim Mong district, walking to the headquarters of HKGGA. They found the route starting from Yau Tsim Mong is more pleasant despite its longer distance since it consists of fewer “obstacles” such as long-waiting time at traffic lights and a large crowd of people at the bus stations.
A group of Girl Guide leaders generated innovative ideas in applying GIS technology for STEAM.
After the training, all Girl Guide leaders agreed to bring the ArcGIS experience back to their regional units and train up more girls to acquire STEAM knowledge. In addition, their skills in GIS will be applied in the assessment of Environmental Protection Badge.
