Esri China (HK) helped Baguio Green Group to enable GIS in managing fleet and optimize waste collection routing.

By partnering with Esri China (HK), Baguio Green Group is enabling GIS in its daily operations, spanning from map creation, planning, visualization and analysis to drive increasing efficiencies into their business.

Originated in 1980, Baguio Green Group is a leading service provider of integrated environmental services ranging from Cleansing & Hygiene, Waste Management & Recycling, Horticulture & Landscaping to Pest Management. Started out as a blank canvas, Baguio embarked on a new development strategy to innovate with ArcGIS.

The organization employs more than 9,000 workers, manages a fleet of 400 and projects in 18 districts all over Hong Kong by knowing “Where” is key to success.

Everyday, hundreds of Baguio’s Trucks go around the city to collect waste and recyclables, and manage the cleanliness of streets in Hong Kong. Before GIS was deployed, it was a time-consuming manual task to locate the refuse collection points, calculate distance from one to another, and draw final plans which took hours to complete. Now with ArcGIS, not only there is a systematic database to store locations of collection points, it also implements Vehicle Routing Problem tool in the out-of-the-box Network Analyst solution to automate the process of scheduling.

Baguio integrates ArcGIS Platform into their planning, operations and management processes.

The Smart Scheduling Workflow was built with these components: ArcGIS for Desktop and Network Analyst Extension, along with Lands Department iB5000 Digital Topographic Map and Intelligent Road Network of Transport Department. Baguio was able to integrate Commercial and Government data within one month with the assistance of Esri China (HK), without a single line of code. This workflow provides flexibility to migrate, expand and leverage the frequent capability updates of the ArcGIS Apps, at the same time reduce cost, time and manual errors and maintain consistency to ensure the high-caliber quality of their operations.

Baguio has a bolder plan which is to extend the use of GIS further: up to Operation Dashboard for the executives to visualize Key Performance Index and Operation Maps in one picture, down to ArcGIS Apps for the Field for mobile staff for routing and report real-time status.

The case of Baguio is a perfect example showing that GIS can help to create a Clean & Green environment for the society. The possibility of the technology is indeed endless.
