Dr. Winnie Tang Shares Insights

on BIM-GIS Technology Collaboration

Dr. Winnie Tang was presenting as Keynote Speaker at the BIM-GIS Technology Collaboration Conference.

Esri China (HK) explained how integration of BIM and GIS can benefit users.

Dr. Winnie Tang, Chairman of Esri China (HK) and Founder & Honorary President of Smart City Consortium, was invited to give a keynote speech at the BIM-GIS Technology Collaboration Conference held on 4 May 2018. It was a pioneering event to bring experts and cutting-edge technologies together for the integration of BIM (Building Information Modeling) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems), which are two essential technologies for planning and designing civil projects. The Conference invited prominent scholars and industry players to shed light on the BIM-GIS collaboration.

In her keynote speech, Dr. Winnie Tang stated that BIM is largely about the building itself while GIS is about how the building interacts with its context and other systems. GIS can provide a holistic and complete analysis by integrating BIM data. She further elaborated that GIS can integrate seamlessly with BIM as a platform with interoperability to handle geographical information and location data from City Information Modeling (CIM) and Landscape Information Modeling (LIM). For the purpose of creating an integrated platform, the data interoperability extension in ArcGIS allows data exchange to and from BIM files.

With its 3D capability, ArcGIS can improve the architectural design by understanding the relationships of projects, accessing their feasibility, and planning for their implementation. It becomes relatively easy for project owners to view the physical environment of a building site in an integrated platform with combined geospatial and BIM data in relation to a temporal and spatial context.

The advantages of collaboration between BIM and GIS are exemplified by a recent partnership between Autodesk and Esri. With a common interface created between BIM and GIS, it will help make smarter decisions, lower cost and reduce waste. As a result, it is more feasible to deliver more sustainable and resilient infrastructure with less negative environmental impact.
