GIS as the Backbone for Smart City

The Hong Kong Institution of Highways and Transportation and Hong Kong Polytechnic University Department of City and Environmental Engineering held a lecture on 20 January 2018. Dr. Winnie Tang, JP, Chairman of Esri China (HK) was invited to share her insights through her speech “Big Data and Smart City”.

Through big data analytics, appropriate information can be extracted to identify hidden patterns and unknown correlations, facilitating better decision making and producing new insights for future. Location related big data requires spatial statistics and Geographic Information System (GIS) serves as a useful tool for spatial statistical analytics. Geospatial big data analytics can explore geographic patterns and provide new dimensions for city planning and civil engineering construction. With Mobile Mapping System (MMS), massive information can be collected which is helpful in city planning. At present, video shooting for more than 2,500 km of road length in the whole Hong Kong territories is performed, more than 700,000 inventory features are captured, more than 28TB of data, such as geo-referenced videos and road inventories are stored by MMS of Esri China (HK). If these data can be utilized, efficiency can be promoted and more opportunities can be created for the community, more innovative solutions will be inspired.

Demonstration on real cases using big data analytics together with imagery and mobile-sensing for roads and highways maintenance.

It is apparent that the interoperability between BIM and GIS demonstrates the feasibility of the combined technology. Their joint forces make it possible to realize an intelligent representation of urban infrastructure such as sewer network or highway. Decision making throughout the product life cycle can be improved accordingly, contributing to a sustainable and better future, and paving the way for building a smart city.
